#stand up to bullying 2016
RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT ETHICS AND ETHICAL PROBLEM SOLVING IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY IN THE XXI CENTURY. RECOGNIZING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SO CALLED ''THE GOOD'' AND ''THE BAD'' IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH ANYMORE. LET'S ENACT ''MICO-'' & ''MARCO-'' SCALE TYPE OF ETHICAL SOLUTION WHEN CO-CREATING NEW TYPES OF RULES AND WAYS OF COMMUNICATION IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE REAL LONG TERM PROGRESS.
The National Stand Up To Bullying Day - 5th of July 2016 London/UK.
It was very special to be involved in the National Stand Up To Bullying Day, by supporting this truly great cause with my volunteer Stand Up To Bullying awareness walk across London. I met and spoke with fantastic people, distributed Stand Up To Bullying posters in my local grocery shops, school, Three Mills, House Mill, local construction sites, local pub and my local library. It was important to me to inspire as many people as possible for many different reasons, but most of all it was important to me because I truly believe, that kindness, love and being able to see the other as a rightful human being, is what matters most in building relationships, communicating with one another and simply sharing the most immediate community, and finally the world together.
Whether I had the chance to speak with people in my local community, or later in the day when raising awareness in Central, Greater or More London, the genuine interest of those who were happy to join the cause and take a stand against bullying was most of all very positive. It wasn't uncommon, that those who spotted the Stand Up To Bullying poster, that I was carrying with me on my Stand Up To Bullying walk, were simply stopping by to say ''hi'', and sometimes sharing with their stories about them being bullied, or their friends or/and family members, who were going through difficult times because of bullying. Some people were simply smiling as I was passing by with Stand Up To Bullying poster, others were putting their thumbs up, or stopping by to say how important it is to know, that there are tools for practical use in help of those who need support because of bullying. It was overwhelming to learn how many of us are/were affected by bullying, but in the same time Stand Up To Bullying Day gave everybody a chance to open up in a conversation about this serious issue.
It was a great day, filled with many wonderful meetings with people who really care about others. It was truly heart warming to know, that most Londoners are against bullying, and that we stand together for a positive future based on respect towards one another, despite our differences, regardless of race, religion, life point of view, gender, social status or/and health abilities.
However most of us are positive about diversity, the problem does exist, and different types of bullying happen everyday. Raising awareness about the issue, as well as supporting all those individuals who face it by providing them with practical tools to tackle the problem is vital.
Let's hope, that each day bullying will be treated seriously, and more of us will have the courage to take a stand against bullying.
LET'S WORK ON POSITIVE MENTALITY IN ORDER TO GAIN THE MAXIMUM POTENTIALITY OF THE HUMANE POSITIVE ATTITUDE IN HUMAN RELATIONSHIP BUILDING. I GENUINELY THINK THAT THERE IS THE RIGHT KIND OF PROBLEM-SOLVING THAT CAN BE ADAPTED TO PARTICULAR CONTEXT AND SITUATION.

#TwitterArtExhibit 2016
Trygve Lie Gallery, 317 E 52nd St., NY 10022.
March 31st - April 21st, 2016.
INTERVIEW with Creator of the Twitter Art Exhibit and Curator of TAE 2016 NYC.
One dream, many good hearts & Art, that makes a positive impact! It is the 6th edition of the Twitter Art Exhibit, great philantropic cause intitiated in 2010 by David Sandum. It is heartwarming, and truly inspiring to see so many talented artist, caring about making a positive difference with their dedicated works of Art. This year TAE is supporting Foster Pride’s HandMade program, which helps teenage girls in foster care learn how to create and market their own line of crocheted goods. It is wonderful to be part of it as an artist, and I am more than happy to talk about the cause, and the New York exhibition with David Sandum and Isha Setia.
Isha Setia(_@IshismsWorld) - TAE 2016 Curator: painter and photographer from New York. Born in India, moved around the US and now lives and works in New York. She started young at the age of 4 in sketching, discovered charcoal, moved to acrylic and now works primarily in oil using warm and vivid colors. Moving to New York inspired her to capture moments using a fixed lens of an iPhone. Mobile photography inspired her to combine some of the photography with other imagined ideas onto the larger canvas using oils. Some of her favorite artists are Salvador Dali and Frida Kahlo and resonates with Van Gogh’s quote: “I dream my painting and I paint my dream.”
David Sandum (_@DavidSandum) - TAE Creator: painter, printmaker and author from Moss, Norway. Swedish by birth, he now lives and works in Moss, Norway, with his wife Kersti and two teenage sons, Alexander and Andreas. Educated in the US, he graduated from the University of Utah in communication and history, in 1999. After moving back to Scandinavia with his family, he briefly worked in IT-sales until he “hit the wall” and fell ill with depression. Through this, he discovered art and used it to combat his struggles. Major influences with his art are Van Gogh, Munch, Chagall, the expressionists, and other colorists. His main focus is to express emotion through color. His personal motto is taken from Matisse: “I do not literally paint that table, but the emotion it produces on me.” He wrote a memoir about his experience, published in the US in 2015, titled ''I’ll Run Till the Sun Goes Down'' – A Memoir About Depression and Discovering Art.
Karolina Karmaza (_@kala_bennu) - AUTOPOIETICS: Six years ago, the very first Twitter Art Exhibit in Moss, Norway, today New York City and over 1000 participants! - David have you ever imagined it will all turn out into such a success?
@DavidSandum: I knew the concept worked and felt the drive and excitement, but I could never have dreamt it would evolve into this. I started TAE as an initiative within my local community to raise funds for my local library, who had gotten their funding cut for children’s books. In 2012 I did it again for my local women’s shelter. In 2013 Nat George in Los Angeles contacted me to do a TAE for a charity in her city. This was a huge success and working on this together, a new global vision evolved. We formed a board together with another artist Robin Pedrero in Orlando, who curated the 2014 exhibit there. And here we are in New York! It’s been very exciting to see an idea grow into something so large.
@kala_bennu: Isha, your part is very demanding, curating for the biggest Twitter Art Exhibit so far, what is it like from the ''behind the scenes'' perspective? What the actual work require you to do, and how do you find time and energy to do it so smoothly?
@IshismsWorld: I was very excited when the board agreed for me to curate the NYC exhibit, but I was also nervous in the beginning. The board members were there every step of the way in helping through the process. It was always one step after the other. First is to find a charity that appeals to the mass audience and find a gallery that will not take a cut of the profits, and allow us to host the event. Foster Pride helps foster care children with creative art projects and Trygve Lie Gallery is a Norwegian based gallery, so David helped with the gallery partnership for the NYC event. Next is finding a group of volunteers that will help you throughout the process, which includes scanning and uploading each single artwork that gets mailed, answering artists that their cards have arrived. To keep everything organized, I decided to create something new, that TAE has not done before – use an online Form for registration, which then the responses gets directly recorded into an Excel spreadsheet. This spreadsheet has kept all of us sane and very organized. We added a column that says if the card has arrived, if the card has been tweeted out, and also the scanned file name to find it easier. I am happy to say that Blick Art Materials and I reached an agreement to become materials sponsors, first in TAE history. Another first this year is that we’ll be using Periscope to broadcast the Opening. The volunteers and I met once a month in 2015, and then once a week closer to the exhibition to get the details sorted out. This was a team effort. I couldn’t have done this without the board members or the fantastic group of volunteers!
@kala_bennu: What is the most challenging part of organizing, curating and promoting such a complex event as TwitterArtExhibit?
@IshismsWorld: The most challenging part was definitely to keep track of all the incoming artwork including scanning/uploading and answering to artists. Since it was only me and 1 person from the charity that would scan/upload, the heavy load of incoming works would take up weekday evenings and all weekend. This was a multi-day process: pick up the artworks from the gallery, have a labeling system in place, sort out the artworks to let artists know that cards have arrived, scan/upload and then tweet out officially that it’s arrived. Even though it was challenging, it was still very rewarding because I received many wonderful notes from the artists while opening the mail. This has definitely made the process worth it.
@kala_bennu: What is the most rewarding aspect of being part of TwitterArtExhibit?
@DavidSandum: I will answer this in three ways: A) The art: TAE has no jury or any criteria, besides having a twitter account and that original hand-signed work is sent. There is no theme, and such a wide variety of techniques are sent: Oils on thin board, acrylic on paper, mixed media, gouache, pastels, etchings, drawings etc. Anyone can participate, professional or amateur. It is an inclusive project, that focuses on the love of art. B) It connects artists with buyers/audience: One of the most amazing aspects of the exhibit is to see all the cards on the walls in a grid system, which in a way turns into a piece of artwork itself. Next to each card, there is a label with the artist’s real name, twitter name, city, state, and country. It is so fascinating to see where they come from. Buyers and viewers can tweet and connect with artists in a very direct way. We have many stories of friendships formed and artists getting new collectors/fans of their work. C) The charities we help: I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to help charities in need. Each year is just as special. I have some amazing memories. I will never forget attending a dance lesson in Orlando for the children with special needs that we helped with scholarships. They also performed at the opening and came up to me and gave me high fives. Or learning that some funds raised for the Moss Women’s shelter, I went to give all the women haircuts and manicures. In the Summer the children at the center boarded a bus for a trip to a zoo in another city. We truly help other people in need through art. Caring artists donate all of the work to the charity. The charity receives 100% of the proceeds. Members of the board pay their own travel expenses to attend openings etc. The charities in focus also get valuable media exposure and other PR. Just imagine the impact on social media when the 1160 registered artists post on their blogs and social media supporting them. Private donations also go up. All these things combined create a powerful force for good.
@kala_bennu: Isha, was it difficult to find a place for TAE 2016 NYC?
@IshismsWorld: Actually, finding a gallery to host was all David! He had already been in talks with the Norwegian gallery, Trygve Lie and introduced me to the cultural director. After the introduction, I went to the gallery space and found it a great fit for the exhibit!
@kala_bennu: Each TwitterArtExhibit is supporting specific cause or/and organization - what was the motivation behind choosing Foster Pride NYC for this year beneficiary of the TwitterArtExhibit?
@DavidSandum: Each local curator/organizer selects a charity. They know their city, and it is important they select a cause they are passionate about. Usually a selection is presented to the board, and then we approve this together. We focus on small local charities in need of support.
@kala_bennu: Isha, why did you decide to curate this year TAE NYC?
@IshismsWorld: I have been participating since 2010 and I love the overall concept – great for the charity, the artists and the increased exposure for the gallery. I wanted to be more involved within the community to help a local organization, because small organizations in NYC don’t get the recognition they deserve due to heavy competition.
@kala_bennu: David, what it means to you, when you see so many inspired artists voluntarily taking part in an event, that once was just an idea you got in your mind? What is the message you'd like to share with your fellow artists, and all those who are about to read your book: „I'll Run Till the Sun Goes Down''?
@DavidSandum: Two-fold answer: A) Seeing all the wonderful contributions each year is most inspiring. The artists put such care and skill into their work. They send their very best, because they truly care about what we do. Through this I have not made a dime, but been blessed with a network of talented friends and artists all around the world - that is priceless. B) My memoir is linked to why I started TAE. In my book I describe my terrible struggle with depression from 1999-2007, years of hospitalizations, and being rock bottom. It also explains how I discovered art, became and artist, and how it saved me. When my life situation became more manageable I felt a strong need to give attention to other struggling artists and help other people in dire need. This is what gave spark to TAE. Only by seeing it in this context can one fully understand my motivation and vision.
@kala_bennu: Isha, what means to you to be not only a curator, but also an artist of TwitterArtExhibit? What kind of art do you resonate with most?
@IshismsWorld: This is definitely my first to be both, curator and participating artist and I’m honored to have gotten a chance to lead such an amazing opportunity. I understand now the intricacies of what it takes to organize such a large-scale event, as well as I know now what the artists have been going through on the other side of the fence. I usually get drawn towards figurative imagery with warm colors, but there were so many interesting pieces of artwork that came through this year, that really surprised me. I already know which ones I want to buy!
@kala_bennu: The opening night of TAE 2016 NYC is on the 31st of March with all the beautifuly handmade postcard sized pieces of art on show until the 21st of April – Where will be the next TwitterArtExhibit?
@DavidSandum: The next TAE is already planned. We have a city, charity, curator and work-group in place. We will announce 2017 location at the Opening! As a hint, I can say that it will be held in a major European city. Stay tuned!

It was the 5th finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity organized by the London Hurricane of Hearts, that supported 24th finale of The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity - one of the biggest, non-governmental, non-profit, charity organization in Poland. What I value about this beautiful charity initiative started by Jerzy Owsiak in 1993 is its unique atmosphere of solidarity in care for all those who need medical help, but most of all for delivering practical solutions in the form of lifesaving medical equipment everywhere there, where it is most needed, especially to specialized hospitals and health centres for children, but also best quality medical and aid equipment for seniors. Since the very first orchestra until today many lives have been saved because of this fantastic source of fast and accurate help, and each year more and more children, and recently also elderly, benefit greatly from it. During my healthcare work experience in helping vulnerable adults, especially elderly, in finding positive ways round daily struggles in lifelong individual battles with different serious illnesses and diseases, I had a chance to learn from the realistic point of view, that high quality medical and aid equipment make a huge difference in everyday lives of those who very often wouldn't be able to survive without it. The best quality care is the best gift that can be given to someone who needs help, and it is heartwarming to know, that there are so many people out there who really care about making an impact in healthcare, and have the will to make a real difference. Each year millions of people of huge hearts and genuine kindness from all over the world support The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, and this year is no different. The HOH London charity fundraising event was a wonderful experience, that I had the privilege to be part of as a volunteer. It was fun to help prepare this year event at Scala, promote it in social media, The British Library & British pubs. It was a real privilege to donate one of my paintings for the fundraising auction, which was sold during the Sunday event at Scala, that was absolutely packed with generous donors, who proved that in the end of the day heart truly matters. In the first part of the event children had lots of fun enjoying educational activities programme embracing world's diversity of culture in celebrating Christmas, filled with music, dance, and lots of singing along by Prima, children of the Polish traditional dance group: ''Karolinka'', and a very special guest straight from Poland: Majka Jeżowska - the Polish Queen of songs for children. The first part of the event was concluded by the senior traditional Polish dancing group ''Tatry''. In the second part of the venue the adult audience enjoyed the variety of music genre played by the rock style bands: Switzerland band: Daxx & Roxane, heavy metal band: Nocny Kochanek, reggae bands: Czapa from London, and TABU from Poland, and the the Polish classic rock style - Myslovitz band. The tradition of the orchestra has it, that at 08.00 pm on the dot all WOŚP panels celebrate the event by sending ''the light into the sky'' in the form of fireworks display lighting up the night sky, or an individual torch, that symbolizes hope. In the same time ''the light into the sky'' is acompanied by singing along together. The London's ''light into the sky'' singing lead belonged to the great duet: Anna Jurksztowicz and Majka Jeżowska, in the well known Polish song:''Na dobre i na zle'', as well as beautiful song: You've got a friend. Apart from the music feast there was lots of traditional Polish food produce to taste, straight from the best Polish bakeries and shops. It was really nice to meet and work with some wonderful people from WOŚP Poland and HOH London. I have been supporting the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity since the very beginning, and I will be supporting WOŚP until the end of the world and one more day. It was very special to me to be part of it this year here in London. SIEMA! :)
PS:... in the end of the day we all have hearts, so let's make a good use of kindness we keep deep down inside - that's all what really matters ;)

from BEhance online portfolio to Chrom-ART tribe-15 experience...
More than one - hundred artists from all over the world and over 2,500 visitors gathered at Tanner Street to participate in those unique three days of interactive art experience! Exploring the current meaning of belonging, as stated the main theme of the festival, enabled artists and art enthusiasts share their views about contemporary art and art in general, exchange thoughts about their art practice, but also be part of an alternative art festival of the current London art scene. It was very interesting to be part of the festival, as well as working as a volunteer to help co-create and promote the festival and its artists by writing interviews for artists, initiating, recording and editing video interviews, as well as showcasing some of my paintings publicly for the first time.
